Belt Rankings
As students become knowledgeable and have mastered the requisite skills they qualify for the next level of training. A student's current level of skill and knowledge is generally represented by their belt color. As students advance they are awarded a belt that signifies their current knowledge and abilities. The belts within our system are as follows:
White Belt - it is customary for students to begin their training as a white belt. The white belt has come to represent a clean slate or an empty vessel that students begin to populate with martial arts knowledge and experiences. White belt students are taught basic punching, blocking, kicking, and self-defense strategies.
Yellow Belt - After acquiring the requisite knowledge and skills a student progresses to yellow belt. At this level students learn a progression of additional basic materials with a strong bias towards self-defense methods.
Orange Belt - Students who have achieved the Orange Belt have become adept at martial arts fundamentals and now move on to more complex skills and self-defense strategies. The material is more demanding and the physical requirements increase as well, but nearly everyone can master this material without difficulty.
Purple Belt - at this belt level we begin to shift away from pure self-defense and move on to broader strategic concepts, movements, and skills. Physical demands increase as well, but it is done gradually so students have little difficulty adapting to the rigors of this belt over time.
Blue Belt - students who have achieved Blue Belt ranking are very skilled martial artists with an extremely strong grasp of essential martial arts and fighting skills. This is the first of the advanced student rankings and the materials require a completely different approach, attitude, and outlook of the student.
Green Belt - once a student achieves Green Belt ranking it is time to fine tune every aspect of their skills to make them extremely effective and dynamic martial artists. Much more advanced opponent control and manipulation strategies are developed to make the Green Belt student a very potent martial artist.
Brown Belt - Only truly serious students make it to Brown Belt. It requires a level of dedication and attention to detail that is rare within the general population. More advanced weaponry and combat skills are taught to students at this level.
Black Belt - The Black Belt ranking represents the start of an entirely new approach to martial arts thinking. Students are this level have endured hours of training, dedication, and skills development and have become truly outstanding and capable martial artists. It is in some ways the pinnacle of martial arts development, but in other ways it is simply the start of the next great phase of learning. It is time to empty the vessel and start afresh.
Nearly everyone can benefit from martial arts training and need not advance
to Black Belt to derive significant improvement in self-defense ability, cardio
vascular health, overall strength, self-discipline, coordination, and balance.
Think of the martial arts experience as a long bus journey in an exotic
country. Few people ride the bus to the end of the line, but everyone
can enjoy the scenery, sights, sounds, foods, people, and experiences for
their portion of the trip. Think of your martial arts training as a
journey and you will never be disappointed.
